Bisphenol A in the headlines
In recent weeks (April 2008) there has been a blitz of articles about the risks of bisphenol A, prompted by a report from the National Institutes of Health.
Click here to read the NIH press release on the report; you can download the full text of the report (a PDF file that runs 69 pages) by clicking at the link of the top-right hand corner of the press release.
If you have already read chapter 5 of Boys Adrift, nothing in the report will come as a surprise. There was nothing new in the report. More precisely: what was new in this report was not what the report said, but who said it. This is the first time that any agency of the US federal government has published an official report expressing concern about the health risks of bisphenol A. As the Washington Post observed in a front page article published April 27 2008, more than one hundred peer-reviewed scholarly articles had already documented health concerns about bisphenol A, particularly for children; but until now, federal agencies -- particularly the FDA and the Environmental Protection Agency -- had relied on just two studies, both funded by the chemical industry, playing down the risks of bisphenol A.
The quantity of media attention devoted to this topic has been remarkable. Unfortunately, most of these reporters don't seem to know much about this issue. So, they have focused on the question of whether bisphenol A increases the risk of certain kinds of cancer, or whether bisphenol A may promote the onset of puberty in girls. These are valid concerns; but what has been missing from the news coverage is the effect of bisphenol A, and other endocrine disruptors, on BOYS. In chapter 5 of Boys Adrift, I cite research suggesting that these chemicals may disrupt or delay the onset of puberty in boys; more importantly, these chemicals may actually effect the developing brain in juvenile males differently than they do in females, specifically with regard to curiosity and motivation. In some studies, juvenile males exposed to these substances lost their motivation and/or their curiosity; no such negative effect was seen in the females.
I haven't seen any media reports which have even mentioned this research. Again, as I stress in the book, I think the lack of media attention regarding adverse effects on boys is NOT any kind of conspiracy. It's not deliberate. The lack of coverage comes about simply because most reporters don't know very much about the topic.
I will try to read and respond to all posts on this blog which request a response from me. If you would like to send me an e-mail directly, send your e-mail to leonardsax AT prodigy.net (type "@" in place of "AT" of course).
Hope to hear from you soon.

Dr. Sax, I recently read Boys Adrift and was shaken to the core. I'm a single African American mother raising an almost 5 year old son who is not terribly excited about learning his ABCs/123s. He amazingly curious and loves dinasaurs, all animals, outdoors/nature, physical play, and knows everything about things that he's interested in. He's currently in a montesorri pre-school where children are reading and doing math at 4 and 5. He is not learning at the pace of many of the students in his class and I am very hesitant to push him. His teachers think that I should review more but I don't want to dampen his spirit. We do have some balancing elements at home with grandparents, t-ball (he's not that interested in sports yet), bug collecting, reef aquariums, etc but I dont feel that its enough. I want to move him to a school that will allow him to explore and to build on his natural curiousity but the schools that I have visited thus far seem to focus more on academics at this age. I would welcome your advise on how to achieve more balance given the school choices and/or pointers to any schools in the los angeles area that may have programs that are more suitable for boys.
Thank you for publishing this book.
Dr. SAX PLEASE SEE THIS ARTICLE: OLMSTED ON AUTISM: WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH KIDS TODAY? June 19th
Dr. Sax - I caught a bit of your interview in the wee hours of the morning on Coast to coast.... every since - it has been in the back of my mind to find you/this book.
You outline 5 things - you forgot a big one... VACCINES. Depending on what camp you are in - you may blow me off completely - or by chance you "have a clue" and thus, sir, here is a HUGE piece to your query. Take a peak at Dan's article and read all of the comments.
I for one would be very interested in what would come of a collaboration between you and Dan Olmstead.
For the record. I have a son born late 02 - we stopped vaccinating at 6 mos. there was clearly somthing NOT right. I followed the mainstream until he was 3.5 when I said enough is enough. They were all handing me a "sorry about your luck" card and "here's your ticket to life long special ed" I KNEW in my GUT there is more to this story.
I followed the biomedical Autism parents protocal, and have done 80 hyperbaric oxygen dives to HEAL THE BRAIN DAMAGE caused by TOXIC VACCINES!
My son may not reach top of the class, but no way will he be where he would had I not pushed myself away from the nothingness of the mainstream table.
My son had the immune system of an AIDS patient, sensory, fine/gross motor delays. Turns out, the kid is TOXIC - heavy metal toxic - mercury etc... this should have been flippen obvious to the mainstream fools. I am disgusted, all of the kids around me are SICK - and their STUPID, ARROGANT, IGNORANT Pediatricians are sending them out for a mercury laden flu shot. HELLO! I think we are looking at a lot more Columbine and packed prisons.
BTW - my son - would never make the 1:150 "they" admitt to...
Possibly a followup book here?

Hi. Can anyone find either the original study report or the conference report that the book's author refers to? I have goggled John Gabrieli, the 2006 Learning and the Brain conference, etc and cannot find anything about it. I would very much like to see the original work Gabrieli did.thanks!
"Vitamin Z" asks for a citation for Dr. John Gabrieli's work. I provided this citation in endnote #12 on p. 240 in the book. You can purchase Dr. Gabrieli's complete presentation for $15 (fifteen dollars)at this link:
http://www.fltwood.com/onsite/brain/2006-04/. The title of Dr. Gabrieli's presentation was "Educating the brain: lessons from brain imaging."
